The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France plans a book this autumn titled Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling the period spent in custody.

The announcement came shortly after the former president was released as he appeals his conviction related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain presidential race money from the government of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“In prison there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he writes in an extract, implying the book is more about his thoughts while in solitary confinement rather than extensive analysis of the strained and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where there is constant sound,” he states. “The din persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world grows stronger in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

While appealing for release, the former leader participated remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, showing great humanity, easing this ordeal bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial forced upon me. I admit it’s difficult, deeply straining. It affects one all who experience it as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to experience jail.

Ahead of his incarceration he had said he would use his time for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It is not certain if he found the opportunity to go through the volumes he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, in which a blameless person ends up incarcerated later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He remained secluded due to safety concerns in a cell roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in Paris. Guards stayed in an adjacent room.

It was stated that he consumed just yogurt in prison worried that prison cuisine may have been contaminated. Although he had access to prepare his own meals but refused this, according to reports. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

The legal representative, Christophe Ingrain each day during the incarceration, told the release hearing he would be safer outside jail than inside. “He has faced threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and the urgent intervention in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Case Background

His incarceration began in late October when a Paris court sentenced him to a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges related to a plan to acquire political donations during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and a fresh trial planned for the coming spring.
