The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
