The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in MMA and with Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his clan's life has evolved since moving to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I adore it here," the PFL competitor remarks.

"My father and I always remark, 'this was the country I should have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father was convinced a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles would provide better career prospects for him and his siblings.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete school before joining one of the country's colleges.

But, life now looks somewhat distinct for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a pro MMA athlete and is viewed as one of the top prospects in the PFL, a prominent MMA organization.

His siblings have taken a separate path in athletics and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a spot in the first team.

"The primary thing for us is to squeeze everything from our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I desire them to represent all of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it could be a different team."

From Wrestlers to Soccer Prodigies

Situated in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mythical status among combat sports enthusiasts for producing a slew of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The region has a long tradition in grappling, excelling in the combat sambo discipline and creating a host of Olympic and world champions.

This success is no accident, however, as children from the region are often pushed to begin fighting, particularly wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"As a a kid, my dad was constantly telling me and my little brothers that we had to be powerful, first to protect yourself, your relatives, and your friends," states Ibragim.

"Therefore we all got used to combat, and which is why everyone understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it helped my younger brothers a lot."

"Some of the players he faces don't have the identical foundation he has. That's why he's solid, strong and really competitive – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his actual age, trainers grouped him with boys five years older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was more than comfortable holding his own against older players because of his experience in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the same age, apparently," says Ibragim.

Amir was signed, together with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as just weeks after signing for the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he transferred across the Pennines consequently.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts saw him play and selected him immediately."

Half a dozen years after signing for the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the most youthful players in the club's records to train with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he said to me? 'This is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They should allow all the youthful players get game time right now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the current starters. I think the young guys are hungrier than the present first-team players."

Since then, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have likewise transferred to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is talented," continues Ibragim.

"He learned every skill faster than the others. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has also relocated to Manchester and spends most of his days perfecting his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he spent three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev prepare for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we always used to idolize him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Recently working with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is eager to win a world title of his own someday.

But that does not prevent him from sometimes dreaming of representing United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he recalls.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a dream come true."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a goal for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they would make it happen. It would be huge."
