The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
