NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core policy, did not confirm this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria digs.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
