New Year's Celebrants Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Forecast Throughout the UK
Weather experts are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.
Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are due to be cold, so warm wraps vital, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.
Readings Set to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Alerts Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was likely to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
