Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
