King to Deliver First-Hand Address on His Health Battle in Nationwide Address

His Majesty has recorded a personal message regarding his battle with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's fundraising initiative, organised by medical research organisations and Channel 4.

Official sources said the King would discuss his "recovery journey" as a person living with the disease, in a video message on Friday evening at 20:00 GMT.

The address, taped inside Clarence House two weeks ago, will highlight the critical nature of cancer screening checks to ensure more people diagnose the condition at an treatable phase.

This will be a uncommon insight on the health of the King, who has been in a course of therapy since the news was shared in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will identify his specific form of cancer.

Fundraising Central Purpose

The annual charity initiative each year generates donations for medical research and patient care and prompts people to get health assessments to boost the odds of an early diagnosis.

The King's relative openness about his illness, and managing the disease, has been intended to raise awareness and to persuade more people to get tested - and this will be taken a step further with this exceptional royal involvement.

To date the King's main approach to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, upholding a hectic timetable alongside his frequent sessions of therapy, and he seems not to have desired to be characterised by his condition.

The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several overseas trips, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and welcoming the biggest number of inward state visits to the UK for a generation, which included the German president in recent days.

The Televised Broadcast Event

The upcoming charity programme on television, presented by well-known figures including Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will urge people not to be scared of getting health screenings.

All three have been personally touched by cancer - Davina McCall revealed in November she had received treatment for the disease, while Clare Balding was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in the past. Presenter Hills has previously mentioned his late father, who had one form of cancer and then later blood cancer.

The show will reach out to the estimated nine million people in the UK who health organisations estimate are not up to date with NHS screening schemes, with an website to let people determine if they are eligible for tests for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

In an bid to demystify cancer checks and illustrate the value of early diagnosis there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at medical facilities in Cambridge.

"My aim is to reduce the stigma from preventative tests and prove everyone that they are not isolated in this," said a presenter.

Understanding Screening Programmes

Currently in the UK, there are a number of publicly available checks - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - offered to eligible individuals.

A new preventative initiative is also being slowly rolled out for individuals at potential risk of contracting the illness, focusing on people aged 55-74 years old, who currently smoke or have smoked in the past.

Men may request prostate screenings, but there is no national programme in place.

Charitable Impact

The charity campaign, which has generated over one hundred million pounds since 2012, is supporting 73 clinical trials with many patients.

His Majesty, in a address for attendees at a reception for related organisations in April, had referred to acknowledging the "overwhelming and at times alarming situation" for patients and their loved ones.

But he stated his first-hand encounter of living with cancer had demonstrated that "the most difficult times of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion," as he thanked those who cared for those receiving treatment.

Royal representatives has not made public what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has been given. The King's cancer was discovered after he had had a prostate procedure.
