Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
