England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium

The English squad will commence their Euro 2028 journey at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they attain the anticipated entry for a championship staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an English men’s game since eight years ago, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to host the national team for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.

England are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would be held at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.

Championship Opening and Demonstration

The championship was launched at an ceremony in central London on Wednesday night. Senior figures from Uefa and the organizing bodies were heckled as they entered the venue by about 50 activists, who urged the Israeli team to be kicked out from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.

Signs were raised with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will feature the Welsh team if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a start time at 5pm.

It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help reach a broader range of audiences.

Host Nations

The Irish team are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would follow suit at Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Locations and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals staged at every host’s main arena.

The qualification draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“This will be a championship for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the game – its passion and power to foster unity.”

More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be made available to supporters.
