RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
