Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
